In fact many consider these facilities as unique and unparalleled. The Palace on Wheels is perhaps the best way to explore Rajasthan – the lands of kings. The train in its week long journey passes through various cities in Rajasthan.
The history of Palace on Wheels luxury train is really interesting. In fact the name ‘Palace on Wheels’ is derived from the regal background of the coaches that form the Palace on Wheels train. The rulers of princely states of Gujarat, Rajputana, the Nizam of Hyderabad and the Viceroy of British India travelled by these luxurious coaches. After independence, these coaches were parked and remained in this state for a quarter of a century until in 1981-82, when the Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation and Indian Railways launched a special heritage tourist train for providing a unique memorable experience to the tourists visiting Rajasthan.
With time these coaches were improved and Rajasthan Tourism Development Board with Indian Railways brought some changes while retaining the aesthetics interiors alive. The train was replaced by the air-conditioned broad gauges new train, which had 14 saloons, 2 restaurants cum kitchen cars, one Bar cum Lounge and 4 service Cars. The cabins of each saloon are attached with bath and shower. The train also has a well-appointed lounge, library and bar.
Media has played an important role in making Palace on Wheels a well known luxury train in the world. Since its launch in 1982, it has been covered many newspapers, magazines and tabloids. Television channels such as National Geographic, MDR of Germany, BBC World, Zee TV, and many others have covered the train in detail in their programs, which have contributed to enhancing its popularity.
The Palace on Wheels passes through some of the most popular destinations of India. One of the highlights of the Palace on Wheels is a stop at Agra – the city of the Taj Mahal. A tour to the Pink city of Jaipur, Ranthambore National Park, and Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary among others on this fabulous train is truly a great experience and an unforgettable journey of a lifetime.
