The Palace on Wheels train consists of 14 coaches or saloons. The names are named after former Rajput states of Rajasthan - Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Bikaner, Alwar, Udaipur, Bundi, Kota, Jhalawar, Dungarpur, Dholpur, Bharatpur, Sirohi, and Kishangarh. The rulers of princely states of Gujarat, Rajputana, the Nizam of Hyderabad and the Viceroy of British India travelled by these luxurious coaches. After independence, these coaches were parked and remained in this state for a quarter of a century until in 1981-82, when the Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation and Indian Railways launched a special heritage tourist train for providing a unique memorable experience to the tourists visiting Rajasthan.
Each coach of Palace on Wheels is beautifully decorated. These are specially designed coaches that reflect the art and culture of the region. As one steps inside the coaches, a travellers is transported to the royal era of Rajasthan. Each saloon has a mini pantry and a lounge to ensure availability of hot and cold beverage, and refreshments and a place to relax and get together.
Besides, the 14 air-conditioned saloons, the Palace on Wheels has two restaurants cum kitchen cars - the Maharaja and the Maharani offering traditional Indian, Rajasthani, Continental and Chinese cuisine. At the end of each coach is a separate lounge that offers passengers a relaxing atmosphere when they come out of their luxury bedrooms. The lounge provides you with an exotic view of great Indian countryside.
All the coaches of Palace on Wheels luxury train are fully air-conditioned and are fully equipped with world-class amenities to enhance the experience this royal train journey. Each Saloon has 4 twin-bedded cabins attached with facilities such as bath and shower with hot and cold water, attached toilets, channel music, intercom, and interesting games for children and wall-to-wall carpeting. The lavish interiors decorated with comfortable furniture and beautiful paintings present a royal ambience. Another highlight of this train is the 'Khidmatgar' or a friendly and smiling attendant, who is always there at the service of the guests.
